Located on a waterfront site at Days Bay in Lower Hutt, the client wanted a contemporary home that was modest in size and sat comfortably and quietly within its coastal surroundings. A key priority was to make the most of the beautiful outlook across the bay and towards the nearby wharf, without the house feeling dominant or out of scale.

To achieve this, all the main living spaces were arranged on a single level, creating a home that is easy to move through and well connected to the landscape. The design splits the house into two distinct pavilions, linked by a central connecting space. This separation helps break down the overall scale of the building and allows light, views, and outdoor spaces to flow naturally between the two parts of the house.

By carefully positioning these two pavilions on the site, the design maximises the home’s frontage to Days Bay and captures expansive water views. Importantly, this approach avoided the need to build upward, ensuring the house remains low-profile and respectful of its neighbours and the surrounding coastal setting.
