Barnardos asked Pelorus to refurbish their old villa and extend it into a modern Early Learning Centre, nearly doubling its size and adding a landscaped outdoor play area. The centre is now licensed for 45 children over two years old and 20 under two.
Inside, the new rear extension features timber beams, laminated joists, and a plywood ceiling, creating a warm, natural atmosphere. Electrical trays and structural connections are intentionally left visible, giving the building a simple, honest character that children can see, enjoy, and learn from. The modern extension contrasts with the traditional Victorian villa, with its high-stud walls and moulded details. Light floods the interior, and timber decks provide safe, easy access to outdoor play.
Externally, the new wing is clad in durable charcoal aluminium Flashclad planks—a contemporary, long-lasting material—while the original villa retains its newly refurbished timber cladding. The contrast is deliberate, yet inside, the flow of children through their play areas is seamless.
